An entrepreneur and marketer, the CEO of Nickmetrics Nick Lai started working early in his life. He ventured into sales in 2007 and wanted to move to a more rewarding career option, so he switched to the new and fast-growing field of graphic and web design in 2011. The experience of dealing with challenges in sales and the demands of design in the early stage of his career played a defining role in his first venture. Those learnings and skills combined with his passion for digital marketing led to the setting up his first venture in 2016, an online e-commerce business. He outsourced everything from design, development, and marketing to India. He noticed the inefficiencies and understood that the differences in language, culture, and time zones were the reasons for low code quality, low design quality, and data privacy issues. The venture ended as a failure with a total loss of control of his projects. He understood that Malaysia’s lack of digital and technological talent was among the critical reasons for the failure of his venture, and it led him to set up his tech team that is now a part of the popular Nickmetrics.

When asked about the roadblocks and challenges faced during his entrepreneurial journey, Nick said, “Recruiting is the hardest part; highly talented people in the IT field can be hard to find. And when you find the right talent, a leader’s job is to give attention and ensure that the talent is always on the right career track.”
“The next big challenge will be scaling the business. When you start the company from scratch, and at some stage, you need to make a crucial decision in order to scale the company from a small local to a national and international player. One mistake could cost all the many years of progress,” added Nick.
The Covid Challenge
“Our field was not much affected. It took time to adapt to working from home, and the whole team still needed some time to cope with the new way of working. The beginning was very tough, with low productivity and communication hiccups. Luckily that it only took us a few weeks, and everyone has got used to it and was able to deliver to clients’ requirements on time,” said Nick.
The company is trying hard to build its own unique work culture and is consistently trying to motivate and reward employees, making them feel appreciated for the work they do. Today, after more than 2 years into the pandemic, the nickmetrics team has become acquainted with the work-from-home model and gives their 100% to the business.
“We focus on quality instead of quantity when it comes to acquiring new clients. Since the company started offering services, the drop rate has been less than 5%, and we keep maintaining high customer satisfaction and by giving our best for each client campaign,” Nick Lai said.
While NickMetrics is an integral part of the group, their other ventures are long-term investments. The company is confident that its plans to create success stories in these new business categories will bear fruit in the near future.
